Pre-Breeding Examination
Today’s pets are living longer than ever, chances are that many may experience a potentially serious illness during their lifetime. Annual health checks can help your veterinarian diagnose, treat or even prevent problems before they become life-threatening. They’re also a great opportunity to ask us about nutrition, behaviour or any other issues.
Consultations are run by appointment however, emergencies will always take priority. If your pet is unwell, injured or simply requires an annual check up please call us to arrange a convenient time. Consultations are normally booked from opening until 10.30am and from 3pm until close, leaving the middle of the day available for surgical and other procedures.
Our standard consultations are 20 minutes long. If you wish to bring multiple pets or think you may need more time, please advise our reception team at the time of booking.
The most important annual health screenings for dogs and cats:
Adult dogs and cats (1-6 years)
- Vaccinations
- Parasite check
- Heart check
- Dental health
- Blood test
- Chemistry panel
- Urinalysis
Puppy and kitten health checks are typically performed in conjunction with their first course of vaccinations, and again at 6 months old. First course of vaccinations for puppies and kittens are performed at:
- 6 – 8 weeks
- 10 – 12 weeks
- 14 – 16 weeks
After this, we strongly recommend annual top to tail examinations and booster vaccinations for life.
During your pet’s health check, we will examine:
- Weight
- Temperature
- Eyes, ears, gums, and teeth
- Heart, lungs, joints, and lymph nodes
- Coat
We will also discuss:
- Vaccination schedule
- Parasite prevention
- Nutrition
- Desexing
- Questions or concerns
We always aim to make your pets visit with us an enjoyable one, by adopting low stress handling techniques to reduce any stress or anxiety.
Pets, on average, age five to eight times faster than humans. By age two, most pets have already reached adulthood. At age four, many are entering middle age. By age seven, many dogs, particularly larger breeds, are entering their senior years.
Because pets age so rapidly, major health changes can occur in a short amount of time. The risk of cancer, diabetes, obesity, arthritis, heart disease and other serious conditions all increase with age. Because of this, senior dogs need more frequent check-ups.

A breeding soundness examination should take place prior to your dog or cat being bred. First and foremost, your pet should be in good general health, up to date with core vaccines, have good parasite control, and be free from orthopaedic problems.
During the examination, we can screen screen your pet for:
- Genetic defects
- Structural abnormalities
